Northern Electric PLC is subject of a takeover bid and is giving handouts to shareholders as a defense. The company is taking on debt to do this but the tactic is seen favorably by analysts. Smith New Court, BZW and Charterhouse Tilney are three stockbrokers which rate the company's shares a buy in Sep 1995. Lehman Brothers sees dividend growth of over 7% from 1995 to 2000. Greig Middleton gives a hold rating since the shares are seen as having fair value.

Northern Electric will make a special dividend which cost the company 55 million pounds sterling. The company's net cash flow arising from its operations was up by 67% at 139 million pounds sterling in 1995 to 1996. Costs have been reduced by 12 million pounds sterling through shedding 400 jobs. A further 200 jobs are to be shed as the industry regulator puts pressure on prices. The company's profit is forecast at 102 million pounds sterling for 1996.

Graham Hawker: the water wizard
Article Abstract:
Graham Hawker was appointed chief executive of Hyder in 1992 and the company's turnover has since quadrupled. Hyder has acquired South Wales regional electricity company (Swalec) and also includes Hyder Infrastructure Developments, an engineering firm and consultancy. Hyder aims to offer customers electricity and gas services when markets are liberalised from 1998. Hawker argues that honesty is important in business as is a lack of ego.
