The company acquired a biscuit manufacturer, John J Lees, at the start of the 1990s, and this created problems, so the arm was sold in 1992. Thecompany then acquired Jesse Oldfield, a cakes producer,and Cakes for the Connoisseur, a wholesaler. Meanwhile, the company increased biscuit production at its plant in Gateshead, England, which makes private-label products. Oldfield also focuses on private-label goods. The company's pre-tax profit rose by 24% to 509,000 pounds sterling for the half-year to Sep 1997.
