Nurturing naature:engineering new antibiotics
Article Abstract:
Identifying novel compounds as potential new antibiotics has been enhanced by the ever present problem of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. A new approach for bolstering molecular diversity involves engineering microbial genes to produce enzymes with innovative catalytic properties. "Science" has published two recent papers which describe methods which illustrate structure and function of enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of two important classes of naturally-occurring antiobiotic agents.
