Olivetti's David conquers Telecom Italia's Goliath
Article Abstract:
Olivetti has been successful in its bid for Telecom Italia and plans to cut costs and reorganize, which could involve the sale of the international business. The bid succeeded after a higher offer, and as a result of Telecom Italia mounting a poor defense. Investments in Latin America, Greece, Ukraine, Austria and Serbia may be sold. The acquisition is to be financed in a number of ways, including a syndicated loan. Olivetti's success will affect the strategy of Deutsche Telekom, which had planned to merge with Telecom Italia.

Vodaphone parks its tanks, nicely
Article Abstract:
A bid for Mannesmann by Vodaphone AirTouch involves a German target, and hostile bids are not common in Germany. Mannesmann's defense does not appear to be robust, and includes an announcement that the spinning off of its automotive and engineering activities is to be speeded up. Concerns about the bid have tended to focus on its size and the price offered, rather than the strategic implications. Mannesmann chief executive, Klaus Esser, reportedly argues that the bid could be recommended if the price is increased.
