On-line communication growing for mutual fund investors
Article Abstract:
The number of mutual fund investors connected to the Internet is continually increasing, as evidenced by the survey by The Fund Library. The online mutual fund resource supported the survey done by Statistics Canada, which stated that 46.9% of the 35-54 age bracket most probably used the Internet in 1998. The number is significant since this age group has large investments in mutual funds. The Fund Library also noted that 92% of its Web site visitors have RRSPs, whereas 68% manage non-registered account.

E-commerce: the Internet represents a significant opportunity
Article Abstract:
E-commerce is expected to play a key role in the business of mutual fund companies, but its convenience and advantages are also coupled with challenges. According to Lori Lalonde of The Investment Funds Institute of Canada, the challenges include the risks of possible documents tampering as there are no hard copies given to investors. To resolve the issues of investing via the Web, the Canadian Securities Administrators implemented two policies in 1998 to ensure better security for investors.

The dawning of a new age: facing 2000
Article Abstract:
The Canadian mutual fund industry is preparing to position itself better in the year 2000, with prime consideration centered on Y2K compliance. Canada's provincial securities regulators have required all mutual funds to provide Y2K-compliance information, which can be accessed by the public via the Internet. While regulators are developing contingencies for the industry, another group, the Investment Funds Institute of Canada, is also helping its members achieve Year-2000 readiness.
