Ooh - it'll cost you mate
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom investors may see stocks from mainland Europe as attractive, but they will find that investing in specific stocks can be expensive. They may have trouble locating a stockbroker dealing in mainland European stocks, and charges may be particularly high, with currency exchange costs added to brokers' commissions. Custodians may also be needed to hold the stocks. Investors are advised not to enter this market unless they have large amounts to invest. Regulatory and information systems may also be different abroad. European monetart union could bring improvements for investors.

How Emu means lower returns
Article Abstract:
European monetary union (Emu) will affect investment strategies as well as the redenomination of currencies. The United Kingdom would become part of a different type of economy if the UK joins Emu, since the UK has tended to be prone to inflation of borrowing. There is a stronger equity culture in the UK than in mainland Europe. Low European interest rates could affect investors using savings as a source of income. More acquisitions and mergers are likely in Europe, and UK investors are likely to take a pan-European approach to investment.

Euroland's big adventure
Article Abstract:
The euro will be used for corporate transactions in Europe at the strt of 1999, and ordinary people will start to use the euro from 2002. Foreign travelers will not have to pay to exchange their currencies, and companies should benefit from the disappearance of exchange rate volatility. Wage differentials can be exploited more easily and companies will have to restructure. Stock prices have risen as interest rates and inflation have fallen in preparation for this change, and consolidations looks set to continue.
