Overview
Article Abstract:
The total volume of borrowing facilities negotiated on international capital markets in 1993 increased by 17%. This significant increase can be attributed to the growth in volume of newly-arranged euro-medium term notes (EMTN) and syndicated loans. However, in 1994, the financial market witnessed the overall decline in bond offerings. EMTNs remained on the rise due to the unsettled conditions on the bond market and the growing appreciation by borrowers of the great flexibility and cost effectiveness of EMTNs.

Japan
Article Abstract:
Economic recovery in Japan in 1994 was indicated by the rise in personal consumption and industrial production. However, the corporate sector remained adversely affected by the continued appreciation of the yen. The country posted a GDP growth of 1% in 1994. The Kobe earthquake brought a sharp sell-off in the stock market but the bond market remained relatively stable. The Bank of Japan disposed in Dec. 1994 two credit unions which accumulated non-performing loans.

United States
Article Abstract:
The US posted a 4% GDP growth in 1994, indicating a strong economy. However, there is a perceived risk in the country's financial market because of the gradual tightening of interest rates by the Federal Reserve Board. The Federal Reserve Board is expected to raise interest rate further to curb perceived growth in inflation rate in spring 1995. Large banks posted double-digit earnings per share growth and improvement in asset quality due to the strong loan demand.
