Article Abstract:
Standard Chartered director John McFarlane has been a member of the Auditing Practices Board (APB) since 1990. A nonpractitioner who takes an active interest in public service, McFarlane was initially sent to the APB as a representative of the Stock Exchange. He has since chaired the preparation of the green paper on auditing entitled 'The Future Development of Auditing.' He has also taken an active role in ensuring that the report's proposals are implemented. Among others, the green paper recommended an improvement of the audit process to ensure that shareholders needs were better met. The paper also suggested that the APB redefine the scope of audit work so that it would incorporate future risk, thereby allowing auditors to check the validity of financial and risk-management controls. The green paper has since been followed up by the 'Audit Agenda' report which builds on its conclusions.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales had a financial turnover of 44.5 million pounds sterling in 1994. Much of its income was derived from three sources: regulatory fees, member subscriptions and the revenues of its commercial unit, the Accounting Business group. On the other hand, its principal expenditures in 1994 covered 11 general areas, with the labor costs of its 520 employees being its largest single expenditure item. Other major expenditures were for regulatory activities, administration, accommodation-related costs and the operations of its commercial unit. Other important expenditures were directed to education and training activities, promotional and publicity activities, and legal and professional expenses.

Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales has launched an ambitious image-building campaign that will use high-impact billboard posters to help improve the public's perception of members of the profession. The campaign is part of a series of marketing and public relations activities that the Institute is conducting in 1995 with the view to enhancing the status of the chartered accountant designation. Among the activities planned are political lobbying through meetings with legislators from all parties, media briefings at the senior editorial level, publication and circulation of articles in various media, and the promotion of debate on public interest issues in which chartered accountants play an important role.
