PE/TIGR provokes genome sequencing skeptics
Article Abstract:
When Rockville, MD-based Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) and Norwalk, CT-based Perkin-Elmer (PE) announced a new venture to essentially sequence the human genome in three years, the companies were met with scepticism from both publically funded genome entities and corporate genome endeavors. Craig Venter of TIGR will lead the effort with approximately $200 million in funding from PE. Venter plans a shot-gun approach, breaking the genome into short streches and randomly sequencing the fragments. Overlapping fragments are supposed to cover almost 100% of the genome.
