Past is the key to attracting tourists
Article Abstract:
Ghana is investing in infrastructure to boost its tourist industry and aims to increase hotel capacity by 100% by 2000. Ghana aims to avoid mass tourism and charter flights, instead promoting ecotourism and emphasising historical links with the US through the slave trade. Tourism could rank second among sectors earning foreign exchange, becoming more important than mining and cocoa. Foreign ownership is permitted in the tourist industry and Ghana is seen as a less risky location for investment among emerging economies.

Less is more: quality and varied tourism
Article Abstract:
The tourist industry in Cyprus accounts for some 23% of gross domestic product and over 40% of earnings from exports. Volatility has been evident with a drop of 11% in earnings in 1991, when the Gulf War occurred. Investment in infrastructure has not always been sufficient and pollution has occurred in some areas due to unsupported tourism expansion. The government is seeking to increase spending rather than numbers of tourists and to attract tourists inland.
