Power behind the fund
Article Abstract:
Trustees of pension funds are faced with a more onerous task following the Pensions Act of 1995, and they can use training and conferences to keep their knowledge updated. Trustees will be affected by an announcement that they have to disclose strategies relating to ethical investments from Jul 3 2000. Pension funds are also under pressure to achieve high financial returns, and are moving to assets with higher yields. Issues relating to a review of company law are also important to trustees.

Pension fund management: no more cosy certainties
Article Abstract:
The 1995 UK Pensions Act includes a minimum funding requirement (MFR) which is to be implemented from 1997 and will compel pension funds to match liabilities and assets. This measure is geared to boosting security of defined benefit scheme members. The measure may not prevent fraud, as occurred in the Maxwell case, but will affect honest trustee boards and sponsors. Companies are moving to money-purchase schemes where pension levels are determined by investment performance of members' contributions.

A break with tradition
Article Abstract:
There are four main pension fund managers in the United Kingdom, but they were losing their traditional dominance of the market in 1997. Traditionally large fund managers with a good reputation were employed to deal with investment decisions, and large managers can offer resources such as research, as well as a brand name. Changes in regulations led many pension trustee boards to reassess their decisions. Small managers may not offer a complete range of products, but may instead specialise in their areas of expertise.
