Pensions and divorce
Article Abstract:
Pension rights may not be easy to value when couples divorce. There are four ways of dealing with pensions on divorce, such as pension offsetting, where the pension value is offset against assets such as the home. A wife has been awarded a stake in the pension scheme of her husband under one ruling which has limited application. The wife and husband worked for the same company. Earmarking is another method, but involves problems, for example where the husband dies prior to drawing a pension. The government is also introducing pension splitting through new provisions, but details have yet to be clarified.

Long-distance investors fight it out with the locals: Do you have to move to Asia to run an Asian fund successfully? New research suggests that you don't
Article Abstract:
A review of the South-East Asian funds sector by Standard & Poor's Fund Research, produced inconclusive results. An average UK-managed fund has outperformed average locally run funds during the past five years, but the conclusion fails, when figures are divided into five 12-month periods. One clear trend was that locally managed funds seem to outperform the UK-run funds when markets rise. Locally managed funds in the area are often offshore and can make use of gearing facilities, which can be advantageous, depending on the markets.

Wall Street's profit puzzle: Whether Wall Street's high valuations are sustainable depends upon how slowly profit rates will fall back to normal
Article Abstract:
Wall Street, at 1.8 times and a ration of bond yields to earnings yields higher than at any time since 1993, appears expensive, although the equities market can still offer good long-term returns. However both home-grown and foreign competition could depress equity returns, and, as investment creates jobs and employment rises, so could wage inflation, with a resulting squeeze on profit margins.
