Planning to survive
Article Abstract:
A recent survey conducted by KPMG Management Consulting revealed that approximately 66% of companies using mainframe or minicomputers have no ready contingency plans for a systems failure. The survey also found a high rate of systems loss among the organizations without contingency plans. The need to prepare for a computer disaster may not be felt strongly in many organization because business leaders consider such an event to be either highly unlikely or grossly devastating that no amount of preparation would suffice. Organizations with this line of thinking run the risk of being thrown into chaos and, more importantly, incurring huge commercial losses if a systems failure catches them unprepared. Several suggestions for developing a contingency plan are offered.

Planning out the twists and knots
Article Abstract:
Adequate planning can help ensure the success of tailor-made software development. Companies developing their own systems must first have clearly defined objectives. This comes from alloting enough time for planning and from basing estimates for planning on reality. Once objectives have been identified and a realistic amount of time has been allocated to planning, attention should next be focused on the planning process itself. This process involves taking the system apart to identify various tasks and dependencies, assess these tasks and chart them considering resource limitations. Having dealt with these issues, companies should then be better prepared to handle the implementation phase.
