Making use of your video
Article Abstract:
Britain has the most video tape recorders per capita in the world. 1986 sales of video cameras and camcorders were about 80,000 units. In Britain (as in the rest of the world) the leading type of video equipment is VHS, outranking sales of Beta and V2000 systems. Reasons for the supremacy of VHS systems, the failure of the British video tape recorder industry to grow as quickly as expected, and uses for video tapes are discussed. Corporate uses of video include: training programs (the largest segment of this market), records of company meetings, and marketing presentations. Examples of video usage by British companies are briefly discussed, as are methods of making video tapes, selecting video tape equipment, and resources for information on the British video tape and videotape recorder industries. These industries have also affected other industries, reducing television set rentals and increasing television set purchases in Great Britain.

Making sure that industry matters
Article Abstract:
Industry Matters is a follow-up effort to the United Kingdom's 'Industry Year 1986'; a program which was designed to attack the root cause of British economic decline: an anti-industrial culture. Industry year fostered a climate for supporting old initiatives and encouraging new ones; brought people together for community purposes; helped eliminate divisive societal factors; and placed industry on agendas where it had never before appeared. The Industry Matters agenda for 1987 includes developing school-industry links, promoting open days and work shadowing, pushing for development of company codes of practice, and encouraging positive industry-media relations. Industry Matters also wants to encourage companies to make their purchases from domestic rather than imported sources to help stimulate domestic competitive production.
