Plantation agriculture: its genesis, management, and role in the Malaysian economy

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's plantation system, which was introduced during the British colonial administration, has become a major economic resource for the country. A distinctive feature of Malaysia's plantation system is the existence of a large bureaucracy that oversees the deployment of a large labor force for land preparation, planting, maintenance, harvesting, processing and marketing of products such as palm oil, rubber and cocoa. The success of Malaysia's plantation system is attributed to economies of scale in its different stages, except for the labor-intensive harvesting stage.

A study was conducted to analyze the political and socioeconomic factors that shape France's agricultural policy. French farmers' organization are a powerful political force and are regarded as a major influence in France's involvement in the formulation the EC's Common Agricultural Policy. The conflicting policies of maintaining farming populations by improving farmers' standard of living and reducing farm populations through modern systems will be the main forces shaping the future of France's agricultural sector.
