Playing footsie with Tessa
Article Abstract:
Tessas are UK savings accounts with tax benefits and funds have to be held for some years. The first such funds are set to mature in 1996 and banks are seeking to retain and attract money released from Tessas by launching new accounts. HSBC Investment Bankis offering a Tessa giving stock market returns from Jan 1996, geared to investors with 9,000 pounds sterling in an existing Tessa. The account appears to have some characteristics of equities and some of savings accounts. Direct investment in equities may be a better avenue for investors.

The trusting approach to tax
Article Abstract:
Trusts can be used to reduce tax bills. Some trusts are simple to set up, such as the accumulation and maintenance trust for children. Other trusts are too complex to be worthwhile unless large sums of money are involved. Trusts with interest in possession are relatively simple, and gifts into such trusts only bear inheritance tax if they are made prior to seven years of the giver's death. Gifts to discretionary trusts on death are part of an estate for tax purposes.

Rich rewards for preference pickers
Article Abstract:
Preference shares offer high yields for UK investors in relation to fixed interest investments which do not carry high risk levels. Yields are higher than those offered for UK government securities and corporate bonds. Risks of major erosion of capital are low. Ranking of claims is not a major issue since companies suffering a crash tend to affect all types of equity holders. The extra yield is sufficient compensation for the higher risk levels.
