Poised for growth: development capital to refinance bank debt is becoming a thing of the past. Genuine high quality investment opportunities are increasing significantly
Article Abstract:
Development capital investment represents more than two thirds of the total investments made according to British Venture Capital Association statistics on investment activity. More companies are seeking to benefit from growth opportunities and many appreciate the benefits of equity capital having seen the dangers of excessive gearing. The move towards regionalisation will lead to greater focus on development capital transactions over the coming years, and venture capital trusts (VCTs) may also have an influence on development capital investment levels.

3i skipper hands over the helm
Article Abstract:
3i's chief executive, Ewen Macpherson, will retire in Jul 1997 and he argues that the company will be going through a period of change lasting for three to four years. He sees this as too long a period to continue in the post at 3i where he has worked for 27 years. The company is geared to long-term investment and he sees risk taking as important, although 3i tended to seek to avoid risks due to the UK recession of the early 1990s. UK inflation looks set to rise, but the economic climate should be favorable for some time.
