Porter's 'competitive advantage of nations': an assessment
Article Abstract:
M.E. Porter's book, 'The Competitive Advantage of Nations,' is most successful in providing new analytical insights into the progress of industries and countries within an international perspective and in utilizing the globalization theory to respond to these issues. In terms of strategic management, Porter's book restates the model of competitive strategy within an international and nationally-distinct context with a dynamic treatment of competitive advantage using investment and innovation in complex production factors. The book expounds further on strategic management through a treatment of internationalization from three levels of aggregation: the corporate level, the industrial level, and the national level. Porter furnishes the most innovations over prevailing texts in his treatment of the intermediate level. The book, though, is prone to repetitive exposition.
