Prediction of acceptable physical work loads based on responses to prolonged arm and leg exercise
Article Abstract:
Examination of subjects performing continuous arm-cranking and leg-cycling exercises confirms the higher physiological strain related to arm exercise than to leg exercise. Ergonomists usually express acceptable physical work loads in terms of oxygen uptake related to maximal aerobic capacity. The study confirmed that this measurement should relate to tasks involving the specific muscle group. Higher increases in heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion during arm-cranking indicate these are comparable indicators of physiological strain.

Rating of acceptable loads in manual sorting of postal parcels
Article Abstract:
Two methods for the rating of acceptable loads (RAL)-tests was evaluated in simulated work conditions to 103 male workers. The work simulated RALw-test was more repeatable compared to the standard RALSt-test. Data from both methods varied because of the differences in lifting frequency and the asymmteric lifting factor that affects the performance of the workers in the RALw-test category. The mean weight that was lifted by RALw-test subjects was 58% of the mean weight that was lifted by RALSt test subjects.

Anthropometric, muscle strength, and spinal mobility characteristics as predictors in the rating of acceptable loads in parcel sorting
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the relationship between rating of acceptable workload (RAL) and anthropometric, muscle strength and spinal mobility characteristics applied to postal parcel sorting. RAL tests were conducted on 18 male sorters. Results show that hand-grip muscles, trunk strength and spinal flexibility exhibited predictive capabilities for determining psychophysically acceptable workloads.
