Prevalence of back pain and characteristics of the physical workload of community nurses
Article Abstract:
Structural changes in job demands may be more effective than traditional training in safer transfer techniques to prevent back pain among community nurses. The capacity of nurses to adapt to strenuous conditions or transfer part of their workload to other nurses is limited. Lifting techniques do reduce the load on the back, but result in strain on the neck and shoulders. Surveys of nurses show that they have relatively high amounts of back pain compared to other professions, due mainly to their constant living and the moving of patients.

Physical workload of ambulance assistants
Article Abstract:
An assessment of the physical workload of ambulance assistants by using the Ovako Working posture Analysis System and a Work and Health Questionnaire reveals that most of the assistants spend about a quarter of their shift time in bad postures. Strenuous situations that occur in times of emergency are studied using a biomechanical model. These studies help modify the training programs and equipment provided to amubulance assistants for better performance.

Diagnosticity and multidimensional subjective workload ratings
Article Abstract:
A study indicates that subjective ratings are effective workload metrics with limited predictive value on performance. The sensitivity to task demands are lower in the Workload Profile but the multidimensional ratings supply diagnostic data on the nature of task demand. An evaluation of the multidimensional subjective workload assessment instrument, Workload Profile, with the unidimensional procedures, is discussed.
