Private client services
Article Abstract:
Private-client stockbrokers have seen a strong market in north west England, despite competition from banks. Some brokers offer execution-only services, while others specialise in investment management. Fee-based services are becoming more common though some brokers, such as Cazenove, have not joined this trend. The UK market is moving to a five-day rolling settlement and brokers in the region argue that they will be able to adapt, though there is concern that some may not have the resources to do so.

Corporate broking
Article Abstract:
The north west of England has a weak corporate base and this affects the market for stockbrokers dealing with the corporate sector. London brokers can provide greater access to funds from institutions. The market leader in the region is Henry Cooke Lumsden, which competes against Wise Speke and Albert E Sharp, the other two major firms in this sector operating in the north west. There are few other brokers with a major involvement in the corporate sector in the region.

Adjusting the balance
Article Abstract:
There are some 35 stock brokers in northwest England, with some 50% of these located in the city of Manchester. Competition is increasing in this market, with new entrants and mergers. Most of these brokers deal with private clients since there are only some 130 listed companies in the north west. The leading broker for corporate work is Henry Cooke Lumsden. The Alternative Investment Market is expected to increase business for brokers in the region.
