Producer prices in cotton markets: evaluation of reported price information accuracy
Article Abstract:
The prices of cotton in commodity markets are influenced by several factors. Among these, price information has the strongest impact because it affects price reporting. Daily Sport Cotton Quotations (DSCQ) which are provided by the Agricultural Marketing Service represent the producer price of cotton. The DSCQ has a critical function because it can influence marketing and resource allocation decisions. It is also used in the settlement of futures contracts. An evaluation of the reliability of DSCQ in reflecting producer prices in the Southwest region is presented.

Sample selection model assessing professional scouting programs and pesticide use in cotton production
Article Abstract:
Data from a 1989 survey was analyzed to determine the effects of farmers' participation in professional scouting programs on pesticide use on cotton farms in 14 major cotton producing states. Results showed that farmer participation in such programs significantly increases crop yield and enhances the number of treatments per acre of pesticides. Moreover, the number of pesticide treatments per acre was significantly reduced through the utilization of pest-resistant plants.

Empirical investigation of competition in Japan's raw cotton market: implications for US cotton exports

The international competition in the Japanese market for cotton is examined using a linear approximate/almost ideal demand system (LA/AIDS). Data on Japanese imports from the US, China, Egypt, Mexico, Australia Pakistan Sudan and the rest of the world from 1979 to 1990 were gathered. Results indicate the effect of export prices and Japan's import spendings on the market shares of the cotton exporting countries. Strategies for marketing US cotton exports are provided.
