Programming the best use of software
Article Abstract:
Outside auditors are increasingly using audit and accounting software to plan and administer the audit, to test the operation of various accounting systems used by the audit client, to verify the effectiveness of accounting and data processing controls used by the audit client, and to perform substantive testing of accounting and operational data planned for use in the audit. Auditors should realize that tests of the data processing procedures followed by the audit client can be facilitated by: log analysis programs that assess the use of the audit client's computer and provide audit trails of data sets accessed by audit client personnel, source and core image comparison programs that can verify the accuracy of reports generated by the audit client's computer system, load library interrogation programs that test the audit client's programming updates, source mapping programs that audit the flowcharts and data definitions contained within the audit client's computer system, and data base analysis programs that trace access codes and give an indication of the audit client's data integrity levels.

City systems: a very loud bang
Article Abstract:
The increasing number of financial transactions worldwide and the reliance on computer-generated information to make the best deal have spurred increasing emphasis on computer technology. In London, preparations for the 'Big Bang', scheduled for October 27, 1986, have included installation and testing of new computer systems, as well as expansion of existing systems at the London Stock Exchange. The Europeans could benefit from the experience of the American banks, which had their Big Bang in 1975. Major problems today are the diversity of the various computer systems used, which makes it hard to link them, and the need to comply with the Data Protection Act and the Consumer Credit Act. The Stock Exchange is now concentrating on on-line real-time systems, and the main publishing and information system is known as Stock Exchange Automated Quotations (SEAQ). Other financial institutions in London are also incorporating computers.

IT systems development: don't despair - progress is on the way
Article Abstract:
Use of the most up-to-date Structured Development Methods (SDMs) provides a disciplined approach to minimizing risks and reducing development time of business projects. Modern SDMs involve the simultaneous application of various techniques, and software is an integral part. SDMs are helpful in user involvement, stepwise estimation of accuracy, more productive use of staff, enhancement of the cost-effectiveness of the final product, and in allowing subsequent enhancements. Information technology methods are now becoming more standardized and, in the United Kingdom, the Learmonth and Burchett Structured Development Method has become the industry standard.
