Purchasing health care services: information sources and decisional criteria
Article Abstract:
A study of the purchasing behaviour of fundholding Scottish general practitioners in the UK National Health Service's quasi-market reveals complex patterns. There is no evidence of patients systematically shaping purchasing behaviour or of general practitioners adopting rational purchasing behaviour patterns. Experience and credence appear to be the dominant factors influencing purchasing behaviour, and this corresponds to studies in other sectors in which professional services are purchased. The behaviour patterns revealed show the relevance of the emerging relationship marketing concept.
