Re-presenting the external: editorials and the Canadian CAs (1936-1950)
Article Abstract:
The monthly editorials published in the Canadian Chartered Accountant from 1936 to 1950 were analyzed with the aim of examining how occupational elites interpret and re-present for their lay members those external events relating to politics, economics and society. This study assumes that professional publications use texts that may act to impose a hegemonic leadership, thereby communicating the visions of the privileged to the geographically scattered lay members. During the period covered by the study, there were shifts in the coverage and portrayal of government. A more generalized transition of focus from broad philosophical matters to techne subjects was also observed. These findings demonstrate how accounting associations contributed to the changes that occurred in the period of concern.
