Training Managers for High Productivity: The Hughes Approach
Article Abstract:
A productivity study of Hughes Aircraft Company demonstrates that management is the key to productivity. Attitude and motivation are the two factors that determine differences in productivity among qualified individuals. Elements of an effective psychological work environment are detailed. Productivity courses and seminars have been used to train managers. The seminars deal with the anatomy of productivity, organizational productivity, personal productivity, and means for improving productivity. These seminars are effective for all levels of management. Approaches to productivity evaluation include quantitative measurement and qualitative assessment.

Article Abstract:
Proper training is essential to the success of work teams. Training involves education in process skills which include problem solving and brainstorming, and behavioral skills such as communications and conflict resolution. Team development also undergoes four stages, namely, the forming or getting acquainted stage, the storming stage characterized by conflict, the norming stage where members learn to work together and the performing stage where team begin to function effectively.
