Blurred boundaries
Article Abstract:
Investors are often told to be aware of the distinction between investing for capital growth and seeking income. Investors should ideally seek both growth and an income, bearing in mind the risk levels they wish to assume and the length of time they wish to invest. The tax position of an investor affects the choice of investment. Annual capital gains tax exemptions can be used by cashing part of capital growth and in this way income is not subject to tax.

Off to a flying start
Article Abstract:
There have been 14 new launches of investment trusts in the UK in the first four months of 1996 compared to 17 launches for the whole of 1995. There were 45 launches in 1994, and not so many are likely to be launched in 1996. Many trusts are focused on Japan, such as Gartmore Select Japanese and Atlantis Japan Growth. Japan is over 40% under its peak, according to Michael Wrobel from Gartmore, who sees other major markets at or near record levels.
