Arjo Wiggins
Article Abstract:
Arjo Wiggins Appleton has been affected by intense competition in the paper industry, overcapacity in the market, and the Asian economic crisis. The company has reorganized and cut costs, and has three divisions based on products instead of geography. The company performed better than forecast in results released in Aug 1999, and should benefit from improvements in the market as a whole as well as its own efforts. Cost savings should start to bring benefits from the end of 1999.

Technical hopes
Article Abstract:
James Cropper is a paper company, and so is affected by cycles which afflict the industry as a whole. The company has developed a division focusing on technical fibers in order to reduce the impact of these cycles. Customers for the fibers include aerospace and computer companies. Pulp is a lower percentage of total paper costs than average, since the company focuses on higher quality paper products. Cropper has also boosted efficiency by investing in new production equipment.
