Hanging on the telephone
Article Abstract:
Sweden finalized the liberalization of its telecoms industry in 1993 when fixed line services were freed from restrictions. Deregulation of cellular services occurred in 1981. The state-owned company, Telia, which previously held a monopoly, has some 20 competitors. Telia holds some 90% of the market for fixed telephony, and 70% of mobile communications, though thin margins deter entry to some areas where the company is strong. The government has no immediate plans to sell its stake in Telia, though this could occur if the company sought a capital injection.

Article Abstract:
The Czech Republic's telecoms industry has two mobile phone networks which employ GSM technology. Eurotel runs one network. Eurotel is a JV set up by the Czech company, SPT Telecom, with Bell Atlantic and US WestMedia Group. RadioMobil operates the second network and involves CMobil and Ceske Radiokomunikace, a Czech TV and radio company which is 69.4% owned by the government. The state may reduce its stake but is likely to retain a majority due to the significance of the television industry.
