Record cos. hire fans to handle publicity on the 'Net
Article Abstract:
Record companies in the US are applying the so-called 'viral marketing' campaigns' to handle marketing over the Internet. Viral marketing enlists the help of fans, most of whom are teenage and college students, to log onto chat rooms and fan Web sites and promote a band's new album or single. Currently, a handful of small firms are offering the service of hiring such fans, who receive free tickets, tee shirts, CDs and backstage passes.

Sock puppet suit gets Pets.com good press
Article Abstract:
Pets.com was able to generate a large amount of publicity for its 'Pets.com Sock Puppet' after it filed a lawsuit against comedy writer Robert Smigel for allegedly defaming the sock puppet. The libel case, which a number of obervers believe is being used by the online pet supply firm to generate good PR for a line of product based on the character, stems from allegations that Pets.com's sock puppet is based on work done by Smigel.
