Retail sales: no problem
Article Abstract:
Strong United Kingdom retail sales were seen as a possible reason for the Bank of England to increase interest rates in 1997. Strong sales could also allow the Bank of England to avoid reducing interest rates in 1998. Weak sales could lead financial markets to speculate that interest rates will be reduced, leading to a drop in the value of pound sterling which would create inflationary pressures. The Bank of England may be then be unsure about whether to increase rates to prevent inflation or reduce rates to prevent recession.

Retail regains confidence
Article Abstract:
Retailer are benefiting from a rise in sales but good quality retail space has become scarcer as a result of planning guidelines to reduce the use of cars. Shop rents are increasing in the UK especially in central London. There is concern over lack of clarity on planning guidelines for out-of-town shopping centers. Empty shops located within urban areas are being filled rapidly. The recession may have had more impact on town center retailing than the development of shopping centers on the edge of towns.
