Review of the year
Article Abstract:
Developments in financial markets in 1995 include the launch of Virgin's personal equity plan (Pep), which was well marketed. Investments which used the term guaranteed sold well, though investors using this route did not benefit as much from the strong performance of UK shares as they could have. Emerging markets performed poorly in 1995, especially Latin America, but the US market performed well. UK building societies have been involved in takeovers which has led to windfalls for some investors.

The missing inflation numbers
Article Abstract:
UK measurements of inflation tend to exclude the tax and price index (TPI), which reflects the cost of living by including the impact of income tax changes. The TPI was launched in 1979 by the Conservative government, but was not used after tax increases led to a higher rise in the TPI than the retail price index (RPI). TPI inflation has meant that real wages have fallen, but TPI inflation may drop if tax reductions are announced in the Nov 1995 Budget.
