Is the value now in value?
Article Abstract:
Goldman Sachs has examined valuation methods for shares such as price earnings ratios and price to book value. The company has studied 259 firms that have been quoted from 1970 and this provides continuity, but firms that have survived such a long time will not be representative. The company has made no major finding from its assessment except that small companies can perform well and they also involve risks for investors. Privatizations have also affected analyses of how shares are valued and their performance.

The spectre of rising US inflation
Article Abstract:
US bond yields can rise sharply if inflation expectations rise and this can lead to a drop in UK share prices. There is concern that US inflation could be pushed up by three factors. Unit labor costs are rising, consumer confidence is stronger, and commodity prices have risen since Nov 1996. Consumers may not be spending enough for prices to be raised, however, and US economic growth rates may not be high enough for inflation to be a problem, according to some economists.
