Ruislip chemist turns stock market alchemist
Article Abstract:
Jayesh Manek is a former pharmacy chain owner who is setting up Manek Growth Fund a unit trust after winning a competition for two consecutive years and a long study of amateur investing. Manek was offered posts by institutional investors but was keen to retain his independence. One of his strategies is to purchase stocks after they have reached previous highs. He sees selection of companies as more important than timing for the market as a whole, which he sees as difficult to predict. His business experience helps him to assess companies.

Dark clouds on European horizon
Article Abstract:
European investment trusts have been affected by volatility in global stock markets, though they have performed well in the five years to 1998. Investors putting in funds in Jun 1998 could suffer losses by Sep 1998. European markets often fall by more than drops in world stock prices, and so European funds could see further falls. Managers are still positive about the long term prospects for European investment trusts due to a number of factors such as encouraging economic fundamentals.

Credibility blow for trusts' trade organisation
Article Abstract:
The role of the Association of Investment Trust Companies (AITC) has been undermined by the setting up of a breakaway group of six investment managersoperating in the United Kingdom. The six are Mercury, Baillie Gifford, Schroders, Kleinwort Benson, Gartmore and Henderson Investors. They argue that they back AITC, but their action has a particularly strong impact because of their leading role. The six firms account for some 20% of the assets of investment trusts in the UK.
