Russian-organized crime groups pose threat to U.S. business
Article Abstract:
Bank of New York is under scrutiny by both the US and Russian governments. The governments are determining whether Russian citizens laundered $7 billion through the bank. The case underscores the need for US businesses to protect themselves from infiltration by Russian organized crime, according to former Central Intelligence Agency veteran Dick Coffman. He noted that the US government has reported the presence of 200 large, sophisticated crime groups in Russia, a number of which have established international networks. The FBI has identified 35 Russian crime groups operating in the US.

Sweeney calls Clinton support of China trade 'hypocritical'
Article Abstract:
AFL-CIO Pres John Sweeney described as hypocritical the attitude of Pres Bill Clinton and his administration in shamelessly supporting trade with China. Sweeney pointed out China's poor track record in terms of human rights, its denial of religious freedom to more than 1 billion citizens and its poor labor practices, and criticized the government for allowing multinationals to invest heavily in a country that is enjoying a $60- billion surplus achieved with the help of workers who are persecuted if they try to organize unions.
