Saltire's preference problem
Article Abstract:
Saltire is a supplier of electronic products and timber frame kits which was previously called Cannon Street Investments. The company converted debt to preference stocks in 1994 and they are redeemable from May 2000 to May 2006, so funds have to be found to pay for them, or the company will have to alter its capital structure. Saltire has carried out a number of disposals to focus on just two areas. Costs have been cut, and the need for working capital has been reduced. There is some uncertainty as to remaining value for ordinary stockholders after obligations to preference stockholders.

Ambitious PTS worthy of premium rating
Article Abstract:
PTS is a UK builders' merchant which has seen a rise in profit of over 100% since 1993, and a rise in turnover of 23% in 1995. The company offers prompt service rather than a low price and appears to be increasing its market share by eroding that of small suppliers. The company is extending its geographical coverage in the UK, in addition to setting up satellite branches. This should help sales volumes increase using the existing network of PTS.
