'Secret' coverage deals cast shadow over media
Article Abstract:
The three top newspapers have entered into a secret agreement with public relations firm Frank, Wilkinson, Brimmer and Katcher to limit coverage of a business story in return for a scoop. The Financial Times broke the news of the agreement entered into by 'The New York Times,' 'Washington Post' and 'Wall Street Journal' which stipulates not contacting any outsiders for comment or report on the proposed $4.3 billion merger between US Airways and United Airlines. The secret agreement reflects a restriction on press coverage and has been criticized by a coalition of media and activist groups.

Newspapers, via special sections, expand high-tech news coverage
Article Abstract:
More newspapers are creating special sections for high-tech news, opening placement opportunities for public relations (PR) firms specializing in the high-tech industry, said Ron Levy, president of New York-based North American Precis Syndicate. Levy noted that special sections are being created not only in response to readers' interest, but also because advertisers like to buy space in these special sections. Levy advised PR firms to deliver hype-free releases that provide editors with factual information.
