It's more than a trade
Article Abstract:
Retention of junior naval officers has become a significant problem because there is a gap in what these men expected their profession to be and what they found it to really be. The Navy, however, is addressing this problem through short term solutions. Retention is more than a monetary issue. By providing additional education in strategy, tactics, policy and history to nurture higher professional ideals during the formative years of junior officers' career, the Navy will bring back some of their sense of professionalism that has been lost to the highly technical and functional responsibilities of daily routine.

The best job you never had
Article Abstract:
It is argued that the position of detachment officer-in-charge in the Navy's Light Airborne Multipurpose System (LAMPS) is one of the best jobs anyone will ever have in the Navy. The LAMPS detachment officer-in-charge is the aviation authority on a ship of 350 sailors and his expertise goes unchallenged. Eighteen officers and enlisted professionals look to him for guidance, to take care of their interests and to make the difficult choices that will lead the ship to success. It is a fun job with much responsibility but plenty of job satisfaction.

Integration can transform warfare
Article Abstract:
Budget constraints and a fragile, complex, geopolitical security environment are forcing contemporary Naval operational commanders to meet an increasing number of contingencies with only a small military force structure. Technological superiority will likely enable the Navy to use net-centricity and integrated information technology (IT) to deliver speed of command in the war theater. However, there is, as yet, no guidance as to how it will establish a net-centric integrated IT operational environment.
