Semper Paratus: the rest of the story
Article Abstract:
The Coast Guard has developed a long-term solution to address its mission- readiness problems called the Deepwater Project. The ultimate success of this critical initiative will depend on a dramatic increase in recapitalization funding during an era of agency budget cuts. The service can expect an increasing role in national security and in protecting the US's maritime sovereignty well into the 21st century. Yet, chronic readiness shortfalls resulting from downsizing and decreasing federal funding are serious problems that will hamper the Coast Guard's ability to meet current demands as well as projected future demands.

Storm approaching!
Article Abstract:
The law enforcement duties of the Coast Guard continue to become more complex. The Maritime Law Enforcement program of the US is heading for a major storm in the face of increasing violence in missions ranging from alien interdiction to fisheries enforcement. Thus, the US must quickly improve the Coast Guard's capabilities considerably and if it is to achieve its maritime security objective. After all, the service's 21st- century missions will require an experienced, well-equipped professional force of law enforcement specialists.

Leveraging LEDet teams
Article Abstract:
The Coast Guard is experiencing serious problems regarding the training and retention of law enforcement personnel. Yet, its operational requirements, including those in the realm of counterdrug operations, are increasing. The deployment on Coast Guard cutters of highly trained Coast Guard law enforcement detachments, which were established by law in 1982, would appear to be a sensible step toward improving the service's anti- drug trafficking operations.
