Ship bid gets political
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal Navy is to award a contract worth 500 million pounds sterling for three frigates, and there will be political pressures which could affect the outcome. Vosper Thornycroft (VT) is a UK shipbuilder which has announced job losses if it is not awarded some of the contract. GEC has a shipyard at Yarrow, UK. Yarrow is an area which has tended to support the UK Labor party, and votes are not likely to be won if the order goes to GEC. VT's yard is in Wollston where votes could be won from the award of the contract.
