Shortened life spans of biotech pioneer patents in Japan: A lesson from the DNA chip
Article Abstract:
An analysis of patent examinations conducted by the Japan Patent office (JPO) regarding the DNA chip was conducted. Japan has strict examinations for patents which has resulted in drastically shortened life spans for biotech patents, therefore, the companies applying for patent should request examination by the JPO as early as possible after filing and take advantage of a system for accelerated examination after such a request.

Russia becomes attractive as a source of IP for biotechs
Article Abstract:
Russia has shifted towards increased intellectual property (IP) protection, thus encouraging foreign companies in search of original IP to strike deals with Russian scientists. Such deals require an intermediatory to help foreign biotech adjust to the local business culture and overcome outstanding IP-related hurdles.
