Silicon optohybrids for advanced optoelectronic multi-chip modules
Article Abstract:
Silicon opto-hybrid integration and multi-chip modules (MCMs) have been used to develop multi-functional, inexpensive optoelectronic components. With a number of device chips integrated onto a silicon motherboard, various independently optimized components can be used to develop high performance modules. An inexpensive gyroscope module is developed by using a low loss optical waveguide process. The availability of high performance active and passive integrated optical components is essential to the development of singlemode fibre-based advanced communications networks, with MCMs facilitating the hybrid integrations of electronic, optoelectronic and optical components.

Optical interconnect technologies for high performance electronic processor systems
Article Abstract:
Optical data transmission technology offers attractive system design options for electronic processor systems. Optical data transmission techniques have higher data rates, are compact and use less power than electrical technologies. Hybridized optoelectronic interface component arrays are being successfully developed, but optical data transmission technology needs further development to suit the needs of electronic multi-processor systems. Technologies central to implementing optical interconnections include optical protocols, optical bond pads and optical wiring.

Optoelectronic integrated circuits
Article Abstract:
GMMT Caswell has developed a generic indium phosphide-based process for fabricating optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs). OEIC fabrication and design technologies can now be used to prepare application-specific devices. OEIC offers the benefits of high reliability, less cost and compact size. The rationale for optoelectronic integration is overviewed, together with optoelectronic integrated circuit design and process technology.
