Enhancing industrial performance: experience of integrating the human factor
Article Abstract:
A study of Philips Electronics showed the importance of the human factor in increasing industrial performance. A case study project was carried out involving this idea and concentrating on the interface between man and machine. This project was in favor of an ergonomic approach to systems design and investing equally in human resources and in technology. The people-oriented design approach should be integrated in a manufacturing excellence program for the whole company.

User-centred design: for users or by users?
Article Abstract:
There are two probable meanings of user centredness. One is that the ergonomist may employ theories and results about human behaviour to work for the user and the other may help the user to take part in design. Both approaches are familiar in ergonomics and have different uses. The justification for the two methods are examined and the results of the survey are given which finds that the most suitable strategy was to combine the two approaches.
