Fashion is important as a force driving stock prices, and smaller companies have tended to be unpopular. It is unclear whether this is to change. Small companies have seen pressure on their profitbility in the 1990s. There is concern that there may not be a revival for small companies unless there are incentives such as waivers for capital gains tax. Institutional investors tend to focus on large companies, though smaller companies can still obtain equity capital.

Liquidity is important for investors since it affects how easily they can sell or buy specific stocks. Poor liquidity is not usually a problem for FTSE 100 stocks, but it can be for stocks listed on Ofex or on the Alternative Investment Market. Poor liquidity can affects the way that large orders are executed. Stocks may have high liquidity on certain days due to the activities of institutional investors, and may not be liquid where small investors are concerned.
