Gearing: a definition for all seasons
Article Abstract:
There are a number of methods of calculating gearing such as through the orofit and loss account or the balance sheet. Gearing relates to a company's ability to handle borrowings. Both methods of measuring gearing can be combined for a fuller picture, but income gearing may be preferable if one has to be chosen. Intangible assets should be taken into account. Gearing can also be calculated by relating market capitalisation and net borrowing.

The trouble with recovery: Britain's economy is heading for a recovery. This might not be great news for share prices
Article Abstract:
Economists expect further cuts in base rates, a fall in sterling and an economic recovery over the next 18 months. However this may not be enough to raise equity prices very sharply. Shares performed modestly in the 18 months after the trough of previous three recessions, with the average annualized real return on the FTSE All-Share index slightly below average returns enjoyed by investors in the past 20 years.
