Speech technology for automatic teller machines: an investigation of user attitude and performance
Article Abstract:
A survey was conducted to determine public reaction to the introduction of speech-based Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs). Despite its potential advantages that include the increase in speed and ease of use and accessibility to the visually and physically handicapped, most of the respondents are against its implementation. Among their primary concerns are the loss of privacy and security even with the adoption of hood over the ATMs or the use of telephones as speech input/output device.

What makes an automated teller machine usable by blind users?
Article Abstract:
A small group of blind or visually-impaired subjects have been tested to determine what type of automated teller machine (ATM) would best fit them. Results of the study show that speech output, acoustic feedback and natural machine noise are important to a blind person's successful operation of an ATM. Furthermore, shape positioning and keys labeling were observed to speed up the blinds' use of ATMs as wrong keypresses are avoided.
