St Thomas': an NHS trust in the making
Article Abstract:
St Thomas Hospital (London, England) is on its way to becoming a National Health Service trust entity in spite of predictions of closure due to poor financial conditions and reduced market share. Detractors of the hospital allege that it will be closed in favor of Guy Hospital, which is the main trust hospital. However, St Thomas has improved financially and reduced its dependence on the South East London Commissioning Agency. It has also raised capacity by 60 beds and the number of outpatients by 37%. Finance Dir John Pelly and CEO Tim Matthews are optimistic that St Thomas will continue to operate independently.

Forging the information nexus
Article Abstract:
Glan Clwyd and three other hospitals in Clwyd County, Wales, have computerized information network systems. Each hospital network includes a patient administration system, an order entry and results communication system and a case-mix management system, all of which are linked to the other three hospitals as well as to local physicians who were selected as part of the pilot system. The system has proven effective since its implementation in Jan 1990, in fulfillment of a contract between the UK Welsh Office and McDonnell Douglas Corp.
