Stagecoach: Breakdown artist
Article Abstract:
Stagecoach's South West Trains cancelled 130 of its 42,000 terminus-to-terminus services in the four weeks to 12 December, due to train breakdowns. However Stagecoach say that 87% of their trains were punctual over the year as a whole, and that their Charter Commitment is only 89%. SWT will represent less than 10% of its profits this year, and subsidies are falling, with the assumption that the service will also deteriorate. Stagecoach has failed to be good headway with trains and could lose its franchise which only runs to 2003.

Back on track
Article Abstract:
Much of Railtrack's highly regulated income is indirectly dependent on the amount of the subsidy given by the government to the 25 train operating companies (TOCs). Current subsidy levels guarantee Railtrack an income of about 2 billion pounds sterling a year. The company has scope to reduce 1994's 1.97 billion pounds sterling operating costs.
