Start up for growth: the LocalMed experience
Article Abstract:
LocalMed is a Palo Alto, CA-based medical device manufacturer that was formed in Apr. 1992 by Drs. John Simpson and Aaron Kaplan and other associates. Since its start, the firm focused on refining the concept and developing the product that would deliver certain medications to the site of balloon angioplasties. LocalMed streamlined efficiency by developing a manufacturing strategy where a small but key group of people with expertise in materials, purchasing, systems and manufacturing engineering was created to bring the product to market.

This indicates that the compensation system is a significant aspect of total quality management. At Eglin AFB, employee empowerment is being promoted side by side with the improved reward system. Base officials are aware that rewards will not significantly increase productivity without education and commitment.
