Stay global to avoid election blues
Article Abstract:
Stock warrants are reviving in 1997 following underperformance in 1996. Investment trust shares have tended to underperform, with widening discounts, and this has affected stock warrants. Investors should be wary of a possible delayed reaction to the UK 1997 election and tax treatment of personal equity plans (Peps) and dividends could change. Warrants of foreign trusts can offer a shelter from UK political uncertainty and a possible drop in the value of pound sterling. They are also less likely to be affected by Pep withdrawals, and dividend tax treatment is not a key issue since their yields tend to be low.

Look for long-life warrants
Article Abstract:
Stock warrant prices have performed well at a time of uncertainty in stock markets. US stock prices are having difficulty in staying near the peak achieved in May 1998, and stocks from mainland Europe are not likely to make major movements unless a signal comes from the US market. Stock warrants with a relatively long life to their last subscription date may be a good investment, given the unpredictability of markets. Latin American markets and those of the Far East have faced difficulties, and these have been compounded by foreign exchange movements, for United Kingdom investors.

A new year - perhaps a better mood
Article Abstract:
Warrants did not perform well in 1995 but their performance may improve in 1996. Warrants may reflect concern of the possible impact of an election in the UK but there is scope for warrants in other markets. This is especially true for the mainland European market which performed less well in 1995 than the UK. Warrants for Far Eastern markets may also perform well, and trusts specializing in smaller companies. Smaller companies did not perform well in 1995 and this is likely to be corrected.
